Census is the official procedure of systematically acquiring the information about population and recording this information and analyzing this information. There are many types of census like agriculture,business,and traffic census. In general the nations acquire population and housing censuses. 

          By the census of a country we can get the information about the population of the country and the distribution of this population on a particular geographical sites across a nation. This is also used to measure the change in population from one decade to another decade.

          The data collected through the census are used for administration,planning and policy making as well as management and evaluation of various programmes  by the government,  researchers,commercial and private enterprises.

                                    Census in India

India conducted 15 times this census.It has been conducted every 10 years. It started in the year 1872 and the first complete census was taken in the year 1881. The census is conducted under the supervision of census commissioner of India under the ministry of home affairs, government of India. The last census was held in 2011 and next census will be held in 2021.

          The 15th Indian census was conducted in two phases,house listing and population enumeration.According to the provisional reports released on 31th march 2011,the population of Indian increased to 1.21 billion with a decadal growth of 17.64%. Adult litercy rate increased to 74.04%with a decadal growth of 9.21%.
